The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), with its capital in Nicosia (Lefkosa), covers an area of 3,355 square kilometres (1295 miles). A census conducted in 1998 placed the population of Northern Cyprus at 200,000; it has increased somewhat since then.
Local time is two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT); however, from April to September, the time is three hours ahead of GMT.

The official language of the Republic is Turkish, with English being widely spoken and understood. Northern Cyprus has good medical facilities, with emergency medical treatment available in State Hospitals in all towns (free of charge for visitors), and the country is free of infectious diseases. Northern Cyprus is almost free of crime; its people are characterized by their warmth, politeness, and hospitality.
