Getting around in North Cyprus is generally quite easy. In addition to automobile, a variety of other transportation services are available. Buses and mini-buses travel between the towns and villages, and good taxi service is also available. While these other alternatives are readily available and reasonably efficient, car travel is usually the easiest for tourists and foreign residents.
Public buses are the least expensive way to travel in North Cyprus. For those who may want to experience life as it is lived by much of the local population, buses can be an interesting and cheap way, but they do take more time than other methods.
Most towns and villages are connected by the local buses but, for many destinations, there are only one or two trips a day. The regional bus companies provide more routes and, inside the main cities and towns, buses operate frequently during the day. There is also frequent bus service between the major towns during daylight hours. During the summer months, buses run till late at night in the tourist areas. Buses can be boarded either by waiting at a bus stop or by flagging one down anywhere along the road.
Taxis in North Cyprus are also quite reasonable, and much more convenient than bus travel. Rural taxis are found only at organised taxi stands. There are usually no metres in these taxis, but there are standard fares for many standard destinations. In any event, the trip fare should be agreed upon before starting the journey. In addition to regular taxis, service taxis (called Dolmus) are also available. This is a system of sharing a taxi with another passenger traveling to the same destination. This service operates 24 hours a day in North Cyprus, and consists of urban taxis that are available in all the towns. These can be ordered in advance by phone or hired from a central station in each town. Most service taxis have metres installed.
Those with limited time to spend on travelling would be better off hiring a car, especially if you intend to leave the main roads. There are a large number of car rental companies in the major towns. The rental prices are affordable and less than European rates. Either an international driving licence or a national licence valid in the driver’s home country is required. Driving in Northern Cyprus is similar to the UK, on the left-hand side of the road, and the traffic signs are international. Seat belts are compulsory. There are good multi-lane highways connecting the major towns, and the roads in general are in decent condition. However, petrol stations are not readily available in the more remote areas of Northern Cyprus, so you need to make sure your tank is full before leaving the vicinity of the major towns and cities. Hiring a car in North Cyprus is generally all-inclusive: VAT, local taxes, unlimited mileage, and free second driver are included in the price, and there are no middle-man fees. Free airport pickup and delivery is also provided.
