The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is a secular and democratic republic, with no official religion, even though 98% of the people are Turkish-Cypriote Muslims. The Constitution of 1985 guarantees the principles of the supremacy of democracy, social justice and the rule of law, and a pluralistic party system committed to the protection of human rights and liberties. Every person is equal before the Constitution and the law without any discrimination, and no privileges may be granted to any individual, family, group or class. Executive duties and powers are carried out by the President of the Republic and the Council of Ministers in accordance with the Constitution, and judicial powers are exercised by an independent court system.
