Water Sports Northern Cyprus ’ miles of clean, sandy beaches and warm Mediterranean waters are a paradise for water and sun lovers. You can just relax on the beach or take part in more active past-times. The Mediterranean coastline includes fantastic opportunities for water-based fun and recreation, including swimming, sailing, diving and similar sporting activities. Among the many exciting activities are water-skiing (including courses for learners), jet-skiing, “banana” riding, powerboats, sailing dinghies, snorkelling, and more. You can even join a cruise from Kyrenia Harbour and spend the day sightseeing and enjoying the beauty of the Northern Cyprus coastline from the sea. North Cyprus also has two aqua parks for those who love excitement and adrenalin, rather than lying on their backs on a beach.
There are also many scuba diving centres within easy reach of major towns, as well as organized safaris to more remote areas with unique reef formations and underwater marine life. There are diving clubs and schools with facilities for experienced divers and courses for newcomers to the sport. The oldest wreck in the world (more than 2000 years old) was found just off the Kyrenia coast, and numerous artifacts can still be found on the shallow seabed.
Golf North Cyprus boasts a fine golf course at
Güzelyurt (around 30 miles west of
Kyrenia), in a magnificent setting near the Mediterranean coast. Additional golf facilities are being planned for the near future.
Tennis Tennis is becoming increasingly popular in North Cyprus, and excellent facilities and courts can be found in many hotels and resorts, as well as in the newer communities.
Horseback Riding North Cyprus has two horse riding clubs, and several resorts and private stables also offer riding lessons. Some stables also allow customers to hire horses to take out. Lessons can be ordered or you can join a guided horseback tour, complete with picnic lunch.
Para-Gliding North Cyprus ’ mountain and beach landscape is the perfect setting for this exciting sport. The Besparmak mountain range, looking out over the Girne coast, offers clear, gently sloping takeoff sites. Flight paths include soaring through a beautiful valley and over sprawling sand dunes, with soft landing areas along the beach.
Hunting and Shooting Hunting is very popular in North Cyprus. Hunting areas are strictly controlled by the government and hunters must be licensed. Partridge, wood pigeon, and wild hares are the main prey.
For sport shooters, the Gine Gun Club has excellent facilities. Set in a mountain clearing and equipped with a variety of quality targets, the club boasts an international standard skeet range and sporting layout, including facilities for gun storage.
Nightlife As with the day activities already mentioned, North Cyprus nightlife can be either relaxing or exciting, depending on your preference. Dining out is a pleasure; there are a great many fine restaurants and bars offering a wide variety of food and drink, and both local and international cuisine. In the smaller back streets, there are superb bistros. For the more adventurous, there are lively Turkish restaurants and coffee shops as well as open-air discos and sea-front bars. For those who enjoy betting and gambling, North Cyprus has more than 20 casinos. Famous singers and performers appear at some of the casinos, to make the night as truly memorable. Many hotel and holiday villages also offer gaming rooms with such activities as blackjack, poker, roulette, and slot machines.
